There's more than meets the eye (snowmaking industry)

  • It sounds simple that it takes air and water to make snow. But where does that air and water come from. It's a much larger operation than it may first appear.
  • In this Session you will see how industry experts manage snowmaking operations
Snowmaking operation overview

Water

Water crucial piece of snowmaking. Unfortunately, it is also one of the least abundant resources. While at first this may seem controversial,to be able to use water in a snow gun you must have multiple things. Firstly either a Extremely large reservoir, or an acceptable sized one that has a reliable stream of water to replenish it. Secondly because snow guns require one to five hundred psi of water, pump stations generally need to be placed every thousand feet of elevation to reduce pressure loss. Lastly and most complexly the electricity to run it all. Running a snowmaking operation at even a small resort requires at or more power than a 100 room hotel. (Blue mountain, Snowmaking tour) That's not to mention the reduced utility due to voltage loss from transporting it from the powerstation to the resort to the tops of the mountain.

Compressed Air

Although previously mentioned snowmaking at a small resort can take up to or more power than a 100 room hotel, a large majority of that power actually goes towards compressed air. Similarly to water pressure air pressure is required to be at one to five hundred psi. At anywhere from 10-500 cfm depending on the style of gun. This requirement comes with a massive electrical requirement. These compressors are some of the largest commercial applications. Often 3 stage compressor, with massive sound, and colossal energy requirement. These machines eat a majority of a resorts snow making budget.
