External mix guns represent the future of snowmaking. Unlike internal mix designs, they feature a separate nucleator and water nozzle that spray independent streams which combine in the air to create snow. This arrangement allows the water output to be adjusted in stages to match changing temperatures, whereas internal mix guns are limited by a fixed temperature threshold tied to nozzle size. Most resorts prefer external mix guns for this flexibility.
